Building Self-Worth: Strategies for Confidence and Self-Care
May 08, 2023There was a fantastic quote a while ago on Instagram, and I can't for the life of me remember her name, but I believe she is a Black businesswoman (if you know her, please let me know so I can appropriately credit her).
She said something to the effect of, "2022 taught me to stop aspiring to sit at tables where I have to bring my own chair, squeeze in between folks, and repeatedly convince others why I should be there. I learned to build a new table. I hope you learned the same.”
This hit me hard, and I wanted to take today to talk about this.
The key to this quote for me really is self-worth. Knowing your value and showing up with that is a non-negotiable wherever you are in your life, whether at the bargaining table in business or out for an evening with friends. Many of us don't see (or have been taught not to see) our inherent worth, so we show up and try to prove our worth to ourselves and everyone around us everywhere we go. We try to sit at these tables and convince people we deserve to be there, but when we see and know our inherent worth we don't need to try and prove anything. We build our own table and hopefully invite others to that table so they can see their own worth as well. But it's not always that easy, is it?
We all struggle with self-worth in our lives. It's a common issue that affects everyone at some point. Whether it's due to societal pressures, personal experiences, or something else entirely, feeling unworthy can be a debilitating emotion that impacts every aspect of our lives. However, it's important to know that you are inherently valuable and deserve to be treated with respect and kindness. In this blog post, we'll explore strategies to help you feel worthy and build confidence and worthiness in yourself daily.
One way to start feeling more worthy is through daily self-care practices. This can include anything from taking a walk outside, practicing meditation, or enjoying a cup of tea. These practices help us reconnect with ourselves and remind us that we are worth taking care of. By prioritizing self-care, we show ourselves that we value our well-being and that we deserve to be happy and healthy.
Another powerful way to build self-awareness and feel more worthy is through mindfulness and breathwork. These practices help us tune into our body and mind, allowing us to observe our thoughts and emotions without judgment. By practicing mindfulness and breathwork, we can begin to develop a greater sense of self-awareness and acceptance, which can lead to increased self-worth.
If you're interested in exploring mindfulness and breathwork, the "Breath of Fresh Air" course can help. This course will help you cultivate mindfulness and breathwork practices to improve your mental and physical well-being. By learning these practices, you can reconnect with your body and mind, reduce stress and anxiety, and develop a greater sense of self-awareness.
It's important to note that sometimes, we need more than self-care practices and mindfulness techniques to overcome our self-worth struggles. That's where mental health help comes in. Therapy can be a powerful tool to help us address the root causes of our self-worth challenges and develop strategies to overcome them. Talking to a mental health professional can provide us with the support, guidance, and tools we need to start feeling more worthy and confident in ourselves. I can't recommend it enough - having someone objective to help you through your good and bad times is like having a secret weapon in your arsenal of health.
Improved self-worth can have a powerful impact on every aspect of our lives. When we feel worthy, we are likelier to set healthy boundaries, speak up for ourselves, and pursue our goals and dreams. We are less likely to tolerate mistreatment or settle for less than we deserve. By valuing ourselves, we attract positive relationships and experiences that reflect our worthiness. These relationships in turn help us see our worth and help us continue to live our lives in our inherent worthiness.
For example, if you're struggling with a toxic friendship or relationship, improving your self-worth can help you recognize that you deserve better treatment. You might set boundaries or choose to end the relationship altogether, knowing that you deserve to be treated with respect and kindness. On the other hand, if you're pursuing a new career or hobby, having a strong sense of self-worth can help you feel confident in your abilities and worthiness to succeed - you'll see that what you offer is needed wherever you go in life.
Self-care and mindfulness practices can help us develop a greater sense of self-awareness and worthiness. Therapy can provide us with the support and tools we need to overcome deep-seated self-worth challenges. By valuing ourselves, we attract positive relationships and experiences that reflect our worthiness.
