Embodying Life's Rhythms: The Power of Cycles for Optimal Health and Balance
Aug 14, 2023Hello friend, and welcome back to another edition of Motivation Monday! Today, we're delving into a topic that resonates deeply with all of us, yet often gets swept under the rug in our fast-paced lives – the importance of embracing the natural cycles that govern our existence. Just as the Earth rotates through seasons and the moon goes through its phases, our lives too are characterized by cycles – work, rest, relationships, and everything in between. In this blog post, we'll explore the profound impact of honouring these cycles on our physical and mental well-being, while also touching upon the significance of lunar and reproductive cycles in this journey. So, grab your favourite drink, find a comfortable spot, and let's embark on this journey of self-discovery and optimal health.
The Dance of Seasons and Life Phases
Life, much like nature, operates in a rhythmic pattern. Just as each season has its unique charm and purpose, our various life phases bring with them distinct experiences and lessons. The key lies in embracing these phases rather than fighting against them. Consider the new parent juggling sleepless nights and diaper changes – their cycle of life is vastly different from that of a retiree relishing the freedom of time. And yet, both can find ways to nurture their well-being by tuning into the rhythms that suit their circumstances.
"Life is a series of natural and spontaneous changes. Don't resist them; that only creates sorrow. Let reality be reality. Let things flow naturally forward in whatever way they like." - Lao Tzu
Modern society often glorifies ceaseless productivity, leading us to overlook the importance of rest. However, history and science teach us that the most remarkable achievements are born from a balanced interplay of work and rest. Embracing the ebb and flow of our energy levels enables us to work more efficiently and recover more effectively. Acknowledging the need for rest is not a sign of weakness but a testament to our wisdom in listening to our bodies and minds.
In practical terms, this can mean putting heavier tasks at the times of day when you feel you are more productive (for me, that's early morning, for my husband, that is late evening). It can mean scheduling breaks in advance when you know you have a natural "dip" in your energy. It takes a bit of observation, but I bet that if you look at your days, you'll notice a few patterns that you can use to your advantage.
"Almost everything will work if you unplug it for a few minutes... including you." - Anne Lamott
As we contemplate cycles, it's impossible to ignore the celestial dance of the moon and its influence on our lives. Just as the moon's phases impact tides and natural rhythms, they also connect with our inner cycles. For women, the menstrual cycle can often align with the moon's phases, offering an opportunity to sync with nature's rhythm. Listening to our bodies during these times of rest and reflection is an act of self-care that can lead to improved overall health.
If you know in advance the approximate days of the month when you are most tired from your cycle, try to book those days off or try not to schedule heavy tasks for those days, leaving you with, at the very, least a lighter workload. If you are not able to know in advance, try to be kind to yourself - your body is working hard already - and give yourself some time off or with lighter tasks for the days you feel more drained. This is a natural cycle, it is nothing to be ashamed of or to feel "less than" about.
"The moon does not fight. It attacks no one. It does not worry. It does not try to crush others. It keeps to its course, but by its very nature, it gently influences. What other body could pull an entire ocean from shore to shore? The moon is faithful to its nature and its power is never diminished." - Ming-Dao Deng
The journey towards optimal health and balance requires us to shed the societal pressures that advocate for constant productivity. Instead, let's embrace the wisdom of cycles – acknowledging the seasons of rest and growth, work and play. Just as the Earth rejuvenates during winter and blossoms in spring, our lives can flourish when we honour our need for rest and recharge.
And yes, I realize this is rather like the pot calling the kettle black, but I really am learning and trying to take deliberate rest, and the more I do this, I notice I feel MUCH better in my body and mind, which is why I want to share this with you as well. I want you to thrive in your life!
"Balance is not something you find, it's something you create."
